Door-to-door garbage collection soon in all Pondy areas

By Rajesh Nair

PONDICHERRY, MARCH 1. The Pondicherry municipality will soon extend door-to-door garbage collection to all areas within the boulevard and to five approach roads in a few days. The new system will see segregation into recyclable and non-recyclable waste at the source itself.

At present the system is adopted on only one street within the boulevard.

The municipality has entrusted source segregation and door-to-door collection to private parties.

"The reason for giving the work to private parties is lack of conservancy staff. Also, the new system needs seven days on work. The municipal staff will work for only six days a week," an official said.

Though the garbage is collected privately, it is the property of the municipality. "A place has been identified for keeping the segregated garbage", the Commissioner, Malar Kannan, said.

The private players have been given five months time. Based on their performance, the municipality will decide whether the contract will be continued or not.

Officials feel that the success of the project depends on the cooperation of Public Works Department staff. The five approach roads leading to the boulevard is managed by PWD.

"Often incomplete de-silting work spoils our efforts to make the town clean", said a municipal worker.

The new system will follow the `Hyderabad Model' of solid waste management. The private players will do cleaning at night and take up the mopping exercise during morning and evening.

The municipality plans to extend the new system to all 42 wards in a phased manner. The next target is to cover the five wards at Nellithope and then the Muthialpet area.

The municipality has ordered 300 concrete dustbins to be placed on all streets.
