Killed in accident

KOCHI, MARCH 1. Karthikeswaran Singh, 27, died in Medical Trust Hospital after he fell from a quarry at Malayidamthuruthu near Perumbavur today. Singh from Orissa was working in the quarry.

Balakrishnan, 25, another worker who fell down along with Singh, was admitted to the hospital with injuries. Hospital sources said his condition was serious. Mr. Balakrishnan is from Tamil Nadu.

Walk-in interview

The Board of Apprenticeship Training, Chennai, and Directorate of Technical Education, Kerala, will conduct a centralised walk-in-interview on the Government Polytechnic College campus at Kalamassery on Thursday and Friday for selecting engineering graduates and diploma holders for apprenticeship training.

The interview for diploma holders will be held on Thursday, while the interview for graduates (B.Tech/B.E) is on the following day. The interviews will begin at 9.30 a.m. Those who have taken engineering degrees or diplomas after April 2002 may participate. Details may be had on 2556530.

Tax proposal opposed

Bank Employees Federation of India has opposed the Union Budget proposal that withdrawal of Rs.10,000 or more from a bank a day will attract 0.1 per cent tax. The federation says that the move will curtail the account holder's freedom to withdraw money without any restrictions. The federation leaders in a communication said that bank employees would organise a strike on March 22 against various policies of the Union Government in the banking sector.

BSNL staff stage dharna

The United Forum of Executive and Non-Executive Unions of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. organised a dharna near Ernakulam boat jetty today in protest against the Union Government's decision to increase foreign direct investment in the telecom sector and outsourcing of jobs in the utility. The District Congress Committee president, K.P. Dhanapalan, inaugurated the dharna.
