Two children die as water tank collapses
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD,
MARCH 1.
Two children were killed and another three sustained injuries after a water tank, built three days ago, collapsed while they were collecting water on Monday afternoon at Madhapur.
Both the victims were children of workers engaged by a contractor for constructing a building near Jayabheri apartments.
They were identified as N. Hanmantha Rao (5), and V. Vijaya Laxmi (6). The injured -- P, Sunitha, Basanth Rai and Saibaba -- all aged about seven years, were shifted to a private hospital.
The nearly 10-feet high water tank was built with cement bricks.
"Its base was not properly constructed and that seems to have resulted in the mishap," the Madhapur Inspector, B. Venkata Reddy, said. The Nagarjuna Construction Company took the contract for constructing the building and leased out the work to a sub-contractor, he explained.
The contractor had erected nearly 50 sheds for the labourers who were living there with their families. The tank was built for supplying drinking water to them.
