Now, ready-to-use appetisers

By T. Lalith Singh

HYDERABAD, MARCH 2. After offering ready-to-eat food and operational pack rations for the armed forces, the Mysore-based Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) has come out with ready-to-use appetisers for those posted at high altitudes.

The DFRL Director, A. S. Bawa, who was here to address a seminar on `Food Safety and Quality Control' told The Hindu that the appetisers were in beverage and munch categories.

"Lack of appetite is a common complaint among those at high altitudes. These ready-to-use pills and beverages improve their appetite," Prof. Bawa said.

They have ginger, cumin powder, `pudina,' tomato and `amla' as the base. "Some fruit-based appetisers are also being worked out," he said.

The trials were successful and the DFRL is planning to transfer the technology to entrepreneurs.

The laboratory earlier introduced ready-to-use chapatis, alu parathas, pre-cooked pulav mix, and instant food items such as kichdi and upma mix.

"We have also developed food preparations that are of a self-heating type and are meant for high altitudes where fire for heating is not viable," Prof. Bawa said.
