Seminar to be held on tobacco prices

By Our Staff Reporter

NELLORE, MARCH 2. A seminar is to be held at DC Palli of Anumasamudrampet mandal on March 6, to demand remunerative price for tobacco farmers. Tobacco is mainly grown in Atmakur, Udayagiri and other areas of the district, which received a setback due to drought in the last four years. Despite rainfall at the fag end of last year, the present supply is not encouraging. The unusual situation has created a lot of problems for farmers and some of them have given up cultivation of tobacco. Some small farmers have migrated to other areas in search of livelihood.

There is also the feeling among farmers that the Tobacco Board has not taken adequate steps to support the farming community. They also nurse a grievance that while their counterparts in Karnataka get a favourable price, the same is denied to farmers in Andhra Pradesh.
