SRIKAKULAM, MARCH 2. The Superintendent of Police, Y. Nagi Reddy, has charged Maoists with extorting money from people in the "guise of waging people's struggle." In a statement here on Wednesday, Mr. Nagi Reddy referred to the letter purportedly written by the Maoists to the Skanskan company, which had been executing the works on the National Highway with base in Jalantrakota in Kanchili mandal. The letter, according to the SP, demanded party fund from the company, but when the beans were spilled, the Maoists changed their stand and claimed that the letter was written for seeking compensation to farmers and minimum wage to labourers. "How could a private company pay the compensation to farmers," the SP asked, asserting that there had never been a complaint from the labourers on denial of payment of minimum wages. The demand for release of the arrested person, K. Satyanarayana, was also meaningless, because he had already been sent to court.
Works hampered
Skanskan had been executing works of national importance and activities of Maoists were hampering progress of such works, Mr. Nagi Reddy said, and exhorted people not to bother about threat letters from Maoists for money but report the same to police for necessary action. Mr. Nagi Reddy wanted the Maoists to stop extortions in the name of party fund, failing which people would teach them a befitting lesson.
