Students develop device to prevent rail mishaps

NIZAMABAD, MARCH 2. Final year students of Vijay Rural Engineering College here have developed an automatic model railway gate, which they claim will effectively control rail accidents.

Explaining the functioning of the system at a demonstration on the college premises on Wednesday, the college Principal, V. Murali, said students of the mechanical department under the guidance of their lecturer, K. Kumara Swamy, and lab assistant, M. Narsimha Chary, designed and developed the project last year.

Before embarking on the project the students thoroughly studied the railway gate and signalling system at Indur railway station. They later formulated a prototype model, which was demonstrated at Srujana-2004 (an industrial exhibition).

Prize-winner

Judges of the exhibition, a Divisional Engineer of the South Central Railway, Venugopal Reddy, the Narayanamma Engineering College Principal, R. Sarma, and the college Director, Narayana, who visited the stall showed keen interest in the project and encouraged the students.

The exhibit secured the second prize in the exhibition. Subsequently, the exhibit got the first prize at Nipuna-2005 (live project exhibition) conducted by the College of Engineering, Osmania University.

The students received the award from the chairman of the Central Institute of Tool Design. The principal hoped that the project would become a modern railway gate system and help prevent train accidents in future.

The Head of Department, Sampath Rao, project guides, Kumara Swamy and Narasimha Chary, and the students, Mallikarjun and Satish, participated in the demonstration.
