HYDERABAD, MARCH 2. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has taken up with the Union Agriculture Minister the need for immediate market intervention by NAFED for purchase of chillies, the price of which is ranging from Rs. 1,400 to Rs. 2,500 in Guntur, Khammam and Warangal. This was stated by the Agriculture Minister, N. Raghuveera Reddy, in a statement tabled in the Assembly prior to an inconclusive debate on the minimum support prices on Wednesday. Though chillies did not come under the purview of MSP, the Government had been reviewing the prices closely, he added. Giving details of the MSP of various agricultural commodities for kharif 2004 and the prevailing market rates during the week, he said it was observed that the market price of paddy, jowar, bajra, pulses, oilseeds, groundnut and soyabean was higher compared to the MSP fixed by the Centre. The price of cotton dropped below the MSP due to increased production--around 33 lakh bales against 24 lakh bales during 2003-04. The output in other major cotton-producing States and higher production throughout the world had depressed the cotton market.
CCI purchase centres
The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) had opened 66 purchase centres in 12 districts and purchased 5.57 lakh tonnes against one lakh tonnes last year. Private traders had purchased 9.21 lakh tonnes and about 4 lakh tonnes was yet to arrive in the market. .
