Duty allowance to be enhanced

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM MARCH. 2. The allowance of teachers deputed for the SSLC examination-related duties will be enhanced. As per the agreement reached between the organisations of teachers and the Government at a conference convened here today by the Minister for Education, E.T. Mohammed Basheer, teachers on invigilation duty will have a hike of 20 per cent in their allowance this year. Those on evaluation duty will be eligible for two additional DA.

Trains to be regulated

Southern Railway has announced regulation and rescheduling of two express trains from March 6 to March 31 to take up urgent maintenance work of the railway track between Kanyakumari and Nagercoil railway stations. According to the railways, the 1081 Mumbai-Kanyakumari Express will be regulated at Nagercoil for four hours from March 6 to 31. The 6317 Kanyakumari-Jammu Tawi Express has been rescheduled during this period. It would depart at 4.30 p.m. instead of 2.05 p.m. However, there will be no regulation/rescheduling on Wednesdays.

Resume State lottery: Pinarayi

The CPI(M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, has come down heavily on the delay in resumption of the State Government lottery. In a statement here today, Mr. Vijayan pointed out that nothing had happened so far despite the Government's promise over a month ago that the State lottery would be resumed.

Ex-Minister's condition better

Former Minister E. Chandrasekharan Nair, who was admitted to the Sri Chitra Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology on Monday with coronary disease, has been taken off the ventilator after his general condition showed some improvement. Though his condition has stabilised, Mr. Nair will continue to be in the ICU, hospital sources said.

Director General of I-T

Kochi March 2. B. K. Sahu has taken over as the Director General of Income Tax (Investigation), Kerala. He is an Indian Revenue Service officer of the 1971 batch. He was in the investigation wing of the Income Tax Department for almost nine years as Assistant Director, Deputy Director and Director. Before coming to Kochi, he was working as the Commissioner of Income Tax in Orissa, says a press note.

National park to remain closed

The Eravikulam National Park will remain closed till March 16 for the safe calving of Nilgiri Tahrs, said B.S. Corrie, Chief Wildlife Warden of the Kerala Forest Department.

Army recruitment

Kozhikode March 2. The Branch Recruitment Office of the Army here is conducting a recruitment rally on March 16 and 17 for the post of clerks. Aspirants from the districts of Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kasaragod, Kannur, Malappuram, Thrissur, Palakkad, Lakshadweep and Mahe may have to appear on March 16 and those from the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam may have to appear on March 17. Those who have passed Plus Two with 50 per cent marks and are in the age group between 17 years-and-six months and 23 years may apply. Polytechnic youth fete

PATHANAMTHITTA MARCH 2. The State polytechnic youth festival will be held at Ranni from March 3 to 7. Though the festival begins tomorrow morning with the floral art contest at the PJT Hall, the five-day fete will be formally inaugurated by film-maker Balacahndra Menon at a function to be held at the M.S. Higher School grounds on Friday afternoon. Actress Urmila Unni will be chief guest at the inaugural meet. The Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Adoor Prakash, will inaugurate the valedictory meet on March 7. Vilasini Award presented

Thrissur March 2. The Vilasini Award was presented to M. Leelavathy, critic, by the president of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, Yusefali Kecheri, at a function here this evening. Bengali writer Nabaneeta Dev Sen inaugurated the function. Asha Menon, critic, delivered the Vilasini Memorial Lecture. Among those present on the occasion were writers Sethu, M. Thomas Mathew, Satheesh Babu Payyannur and K. G. Sankara Pillai, P. V. Krishnan Nair, secretary, Kerala Sahitya Akademi; and Sreemolanagaram Mohan, secretary, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi.

Schoolchildren hospitalised

PATHANAMTHITTA MARCH 2. Twenty-one children of the Government Lower Primary School at Kunnamthanam, near Mallappally, have been admitted to Kottayam Medical College Hospital today after they developed stomach disorders after consuming poisonous fruits by mistake. According to the school authorities, the children reportedly consumed the fruits of hydnocarpus tree, mistaking it for the sapporta fruit. The children are out of danger, the sources said.

Social service award

KOLLAM March 2. The noted social worker, Noorji Jalal, has been selected for this year's C.H. Mohammed Koya Memorial Social Service Award instituted by the Karunagapally-based C.H. Cultural Forum. The award, which carries a cash prize of Rs. 5,000, trophy and a citation will be presented to Ms. Jalal at a function to be held here on April 5.

Art of Living course

The Kollam City Centre will organise a basic course on the Art of Living at the Kadappakada Sports Club here from March 8 to 13. The course will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Those wishing to attend the course may contact phone: 2742121 or 9387354659.

Malabar Kalamela

KOZHIKODE MARCH 2. Applications are invited from those wishing to participate in the Malabar Kalamela-2005 organised by the Kerala Mappila Sangeetha Academy at the Town hall here in the third week of March. State-level contests will be held in light music, Mappilappattu, Oppana, Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kolkali, Thiruvathirakali, Margamkali, Daffmuttu, and cinematic dance. Arabic Munshis' meet

The 53rd State conference of the Kerala Arabic Munshis Association (KAMA) will be held here from March 3 to 5. The annual report will be presented on March 3. The conference will be inaugurated on March 4 by former MLA N.P. Moideen. The C.H. Mohammed Koya Memorial Lecture and Arabic language conference are some of the programmes being conducted as part of the State meet.
