Bid to grab prime land foiled

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI, MARCH 2. Yet another attempt to grab a valuable piece of land in Tirupati was foiled by the revenue and police officials.

Mild tension was witnessed in Padmavathipuram panchayat and police had to intervene to restore calm. The incident is the latest in the chain of attempts made in the recent times in the fringe colonies in Tirupati rural mandal.

In Padmavathipuram Colony on Tiruchanur road, a woman had allegedly erected some huts on Tuesday, though similar attempts by her were thwarted twice.

No documents

A resident of Korlagunta, she had reportedly staked claim over the land saying she had purchased it recently, though she had no answer when cornered by the revenue authorities to show the documents.

Of the 113 acres of Government land in Padmavathipuram, six acres had already been encroached upon and the present case involved 20 cents in the posh colony, which is home to senior politicians and top businessmen of the district.

The Tirupati Rural Mandal Revenue Officer, P. Surendra Babu, visited the spot and assured to provide her accommodation at Karakambadi under a Government housing scheme, but the woman was unrelenting.

Huts removed

With no option left, the officials got the huts removed with the help of Tiruchanur police, ignoring the hue and cry repeatedly raised by an irate mob to prevent the operation, which led to tension.

When contacted by The Hindu later, a senior revenue official said that a professional and organised land-grabbing network operating in the locality was behind the plot to usurp the land, using the woman as a pawn and that similar attempts would be sternly dealt with.

Tension was witnessed in the area till evening.
