NSS awards presented

MANGALORE, MARCH 2. The president of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, A. Srinivas Rao, presented the maiden National Service Scheme (NSS) awards instituted by Mangalore University as part its silver jubilee celebrations and that of the NSS unit in the university, at a function here on Wednesday. The Vice-Chancellor of the university, B. Hanumaiah, presided over the function.

Ganesh Bejai, principal of the Government First-Grade College, Vamadapadavu in Bantwal taluk, received the Best NSS Unit Award. Hariprasad Shetty, project officer and a student of the college, and Kumudaksha received the Best Project Officer and the Best Male Volunteer awards, respectively. Shwetha Rani of Cauvery College, Gonikoppa, received the Best Female Volunteer award.

The NSS coordinator of Mangalore University, B. Chandrashekar, said the awards have been instituted to encourage students and lecturers to actively participate in NSS activities.

The award winners were selected by a four-member selection committee headed by Prof. Hanumaiah.

While Mr. Bejai received a cash prize of Rs. 3,000 and a rolling trophy on behalf of his college, Mr. Shetty received a cash prize of Rs. 2,000 and a rolling trophy. Mr. Kumudaksha and Ms. Shwetha Rani received cash prizes of Rs. 1,500 and rolling trophies.

The e awards will become an annual feature of the university henceforth, Mr. Chandrashekar said.

While Mangalore University was set up in 1980, it took over the administration of the NSS from the University of Mysore in 1981. There are nearly 10,000 NSS volunteers as against 4,500 volunteers when the NSS was started in 1981.

The NSS unit of the university has won laurels at State and national levels in the past 25 years, including the Best National NSS Volunteer Award in 1993-94.
