Advani withdraws comment
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
MARCH 2.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, L.K. Advani, withdrew his comment about the Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee, today after the Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Kapil Sibal, objected to remarks being made against the Chair. Speaking about the political developments in Jharkhand amid the din thatreigned in the House today, Mr. Advani reacted sharply to Mr. Chatterjee's efforts to reason with the Opposition. "I do not expect this running commentary from you," Mr. Advani said.
While Mr. Chatterjee let it pass, Mr. Sibal was quick on his feet objecting to the comment.
Reacting to Mr. Advani's observations on "the way the Constitution was being subverted by the Congress" in Jharkhand, Mr. Sibal said: "If he is so bothered about Constitutional norms, he should also be bothered about Parliamentary norms. Mr. Advani should withdraw his comments." Even as the Opposition protested and a fresh round of heckling began, Mr. Advani said: "I withdraw my words."
