This Day That Age
The British Foreign Secretary, Sir Anthony Eden, speaking on the Formosa situation at a press conference in New Delhi on March 3 said that if some indications were given of a willingness to renounce the use of force on all sides, it would help to establish conditions under which a settlement may be brought about by discussion and conciliation. He said he had discussed the Formosa problem with the U.S. Secretary of State, Mr. Dulles, at Bangkok and he believed that the talks were useful and informative. He would no doubt discuss the situation with Prime Minister Nehru, though he thought there would be nothing more to be said on the subject. Asked how soon a Formosa conference could be convened, Mr. Eden said a good deal of groundwork must be done to secure agreement on the objectives of such a conference and the countries which should participate. He agreed with a questioner that India could play an important role in preparing the groundwork. Mr. Eden said that the recent Bangkok meeting of the SEATO nations had speedily accomplished what was agreed to at Manila.
