This Day That Age
Crown Prince Mahendra Vikram of Nepal on March 2 proclaimed for the "time being" direct rule in the country, after accepting the resignation of the Prime Minister, Mr. M.P. Koirala, and dissolving his 21-month-old Cabinet. In a broadcast from the Royal Palace, the Crown Prince appealed to the people and all political parties, Government personnel and the civil and military services to give their best cooperation to him. The Crown Prince was vested with royal powers on February 18 by King Tribhuvan, who is now undergoing medical treatment abroad. The Crown Prince's action was the culmination of the political crisis in Nepal, following the Koirala Government's defeat in the Advisory Assembly on the Foreign Ministry demands for funds last January.
