Kanwalpreet may be banned

CHENNAI, MARCH 3. Punjab Police's defender, Kanwalpreet Singh, faces a threat of ban for two years from competitive hockey for his attack on Deepak Thakur in the Ranjit Singh memorial tournament in Delhi last week.

The Indian Hockey Federation is awaiting a final report on the incident that took place in the contest between Punjab Police and Indian Oil Corporation last Saturday.

Punjab Police was scratched from the tournament after this ugly incident.

The IHF is striving to figure out what the provocation was that led to such a violent attack inflicting injuries and leading to a fractured nose. The Tournament Director, Amarjeet Singh Bawa, is expected to submit his report in a day or two, even as Olympian forward, Deepak Thakur, is being discharged on Thursday from the hospital.

Sources in the IHF say the matter has to be examined thoroughly, and the guilty must be punished so that such incidents are not repeated.

There have been instances of players indulging in violent attacks on rival players getting away unpunished by merely expressing regret over the incidents with a letter of apology. — Our Hockey Correspondent.
