Candidate barters his claim for money

By Our Correspondent

KOLAR, MARCH 3. The authorities had to face a strange situation when two candidates of Gajaladinne village in Kolar taluk secured the same number of votes in the recent gram panchayat elections.

When the authorities suggested a draw of lots, the candidates, Nanjappa and Hanumanthappa, did not agree on that but ultimately one of them decided to give up the claim for Rs. 6,000.

Mr. Nanjappa reportedly told Mr. Hanumanthappa that in the event of his (Mr. Hanumanthappa) losing in the draw of lots he would not gain anything.

Instead, if he gave up his claim over the seat he would at least get the money.

After an agreement was reached, Mr. Hanumanthappa reportedly asked the election authorities to declare Mr. Nanjappa as winner.
