ISLAMABAD, MARCH 3. The Lahore High Court has overturned the death sentences of five men charged with gang rape. The village panchayat in 2002 ordered the rape as punishment for the woman because of her brother's alleged affair with a woman of an influential clan. A two-member bench of the Court in Multan has commuted the death sentences to life imprisonment. The incident had sparked national and international outrage and triggered debate on the continued hold of the feudals over rural Pakistan. The victim has turned into an activist working for protection of rights of women and children and set up a school for girls with the compensation money she received. "The verdict of the anti-terrorism court in August 2002 was largely influenced by media hype and government pressure," defence lawyer Salim was quoted as telling reporters after the High Court verdict. The woman, in her early 30s, was raped for more than an hour in the village of Meerwala in Punjab province on the orders of the panchayat jury. Four of those originally sentenced to death were found guilty of participating in the rape. The other two were members of the tribal jury.
