VELLORE, MARCH 3. The salespersons of 79 fair price shops in Vellore district have been fined for irregularities, including preparation of bogus bills and diversion of commodities. This follows raids conducted by the District Supply Officer, S. Elangovan, and flying squad officials in February. A fine of Rs. 18,970 has been levied on the salesmen. According to a release from the Collector, S. Gopalakrishnan, an unaccounted shortage of 906 kg of rice, 147 kg of sugar, 20 kg of wheat and 152 litres of kerosene was detected during the raids. Action was taken against five salesmen for their failure to open the fair price shops on time and against two salesmen for irregularities in weighing commodities. Fifteen bogus cards were detected and cancelled during the raids.
