Desalination plant installed

NAGAPATTINAM, MARCH 3 . Tata Projects Limited, Hyderabad, has installed a desalination plant for tsunami-hit people at Keechankuppam and Akkaraipettai on the Nagapattinam coast.

The plant, with a capacity to produce 3,000 litres of water an hour, was put into operation two days ago after it was inaugurated by P. Umanath, Sub-Collector.

Y.B. Bhatt of Tata Projects Limited said 25,000 litres was being produced every day through the plant, and sample was being sent to the TWAD Board laboratory. The report was displayed on the delivery tank. The total cost was Rs.65 lakhs and the cost of production was 15 paise a litre.

Mr. Bhatt said water was sourced from an open well and put into a the multigrade sand filter dosing of alum and hypo chlorite to remove suspended matter and to kill the pathogenic bacteria respectively. Clear water from the pre-treatment is collected in to the clear water storage tank and from there water passes through three stages of filtration mainly 20 micron, 10 micron and five micron filters. Water also passes through the activated carbon filter before entering into reverse osmosis system. Quality product water is then collected into the 5,000 litres tank and chlorine level is maintained here Mr.Bhatt said.

J.Radhakrishnan, Nagapattinam Collector, who inspected the desalination plant on Monday, said that each family was allowed to collect 25 litres of water per day for cooking and drinking purpose only for which tokens had been issued.

The Collector recently inaugurated a desalination plant set up by Thirumalai Charity Trust and Thirumalai Chemicals Limited in Nagapattinam.
