Naxals justify massacre

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL, MARCH 3. The Nallamala Forest Division secretary of the CPI (Maoist), Sudharshan, has justified the action of the naxalites at Vempenta in which eight persons were done to death. In a telephonic statement, which was circulated to reporters at Atmakur on Thursday, the Maoist leader said those who played an active role in the carnage of 1998 in which nine persons were killed were done to death now. Swamidas and David were punished as the former drew up the plan for the carnage while David transported explosives from former MLA, Budda Vengal Reddy, to the villagers, he said. Though the two were dalits they were instrumental in perpetrating the violence on dalits. He said the People's Liberation Guerilla Army (PLGA) would award the same punishment to those who indulged in the crime against oppressed sections.

Our Hyderabad Staff Reporter writes:

The CPI-ML Janashakti group has said that the Vempenta incident should not be a dampener for the Government to hold the second round of talks with naxalites. It also criticised the Government for its "fascist" policies and continuing the "fake encounters" and combing operations by the police.

In a press statement here on Thursday, Janashakthi representatives -- K. Chandranna and Ch. Srinivasa Rao -- alleged that due to the Government's policy in the last few months several party activists were killed, which had affected the peace process. Now, after the Vempenta incident, the Government was intending to give a legal cover to its `fascist' activities, they claimed.
