Amarinder to lead team to Pakistan

CHANDIGARH, MAR. 3 .The Punjab Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh, will make a courtesy call on the Pakistan President, Parvez Musharraf, and hold wide-ranging discussions with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province during his four-day visit to the neighbouring country from March 14.

He will also lay the foundation stone for four-laning of the Nankana Sahab-Wagah highway along with his Pakistan counterpart, Parvez Elahi.

A delegation of the CII would leave for Pakistan four days earlier to hold initial discussions, Capt. Singh told a news conference here today. The two sides would explore possibilities for trade, the final clearance for which depended on bilateral agreements between the two nations, he said.

Capt. Singh said the delegation would make a courtesy call on Gen. Musharraf on March 15 and the next day he and Mr. Elahi would lay the foundation stone for four-laning the highway from Nankana Sahab in Pakistan to Wagah.

He expressed enthusiasm about exporting wheat to Pakistan if the bilateral ties permitted. ``Wheat is sold at Rs 1,800 per quintal in Pakistan's Punjab province as compared to Rs 6,00 per quintal this side,'' he said adding that exporting wheat from Punjab to Karachi via Mumbai and Dubai increased the cost. He said that he would impress upon the Centre to take action as the issue had to be settled by the two countries at the national level.

The delegation would not be taking up the issue of release of prisoners since it was again a matter for the Centre to decide. ``We are going for Punjab to Punjab inter-action,'' Capt. Singh said.

A beginning has been made in people-to-people contact between the two Punjabs, he said and underscored the need to liberalise visa rules. PTI
