Constitution limited my powers: Narayanan

NEW DELHI, MARCH 3. Close on the heels of his charge that the former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, did nothing effective to tackle the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat despite repeated requests, the former President, K.R. Narayanan, said today that limits on his powers set by the Constitution prevented him from doing "anything further."

"I couldn't go further than the limits of the Constitution," Mr. Narayanan told presspersons here when asked why he did not take any concrete action during the riots.

"As President, I can only advise the Prime Minister. I have no other powers," he said. — PTI
