`Nothing wrong in seeking share in power'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, MARCH 3. The former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, M.P. Subramaniam, has come out in support of the Union Minister of State for Industries and Commerce, E.V.K.S. Elangovan's demand for a share in power for the party in the State after the next Assembly election.

What was wrong in the Congress seeking a share in power when the Dravidian parties needed its support for victory in the elections, he wondered while talking to newsmen here today.

Mr. Elangovan said he was only echoing the views of Congressmen in the State. It was unfortunate that the high command instead of respecting the views of the party workers was contemplating action against him. The party, he said, need not take the DMK's threat of withdrawing from the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre seriously, especially at a time when the party had seven Ministers in the Central Cabinet.

He said the Congress should also weigh the option of aligning with the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) if it was ready to share power with the Congress.

Meanwhile, posters have appeared in different parts of the city appealing to the party high command not to take action against Mr. Elangovan.

The posters said that a coalition government was the party workers' goal and no one could prevent such a government in the State.

The party men were not ready to sacrifice Mr. Elangovan for the sake of the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, they added. Similar posters were found in other parts of the State.
