VIJAYAWADA, MARCH 3. The city secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxists), Ch. Babu Rao, was arrested by Krishnalanka police on Thursday on the charge of preventing Government officers from executing their duty. It may be recalled that 500 families of a slum adjoining Padmavathi ghat were relocated during Krishna pushkaramas in Rajarajeswaripet. However, the people, who were given 10 square yards of land by the municipal authorities, agitated about the unhygienic conditions prevalent in the new locality following the death of girl.
CITU dharna
The agitators, led by Mr. Babu Rao, laid siege to the Municipal Corporation office on October 4, 2004. On a complaint by the Additional Commissioner of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), the Krishnalanka police registered cases against Mr. Babu Rao, D. Vishnuvardhan and P. Sambi Reddy, under Sections 141, 142, 143, 341, 447, 448, 290, 188 and 353 read with 149 of IPC. In another case, the Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) organised a dharna in front of the VMC office against the removal of contract workers from service. The dharna was led by the CPI (M) leader, Donepudi Kasinath, and three others. The police arrested them under sections 141, 142, 143, 341, 447, 448, 290, 353 read with 149 of IPC. All the arrested were produced before the IV Metropolitan Magistrate on Thursday. However, the magistrate asked the police to inform the families of the leaders about their arrest and produce them again on Friday. The arrested leaders would have to stay put in the police station till further orders from the court.
