`No mention of IIT Basar in Budget disappointing'

By Our Staff Reporter

WARANGAL, MARCH 3. The noted educationist, C. Ramaiah, has said the Union Budget disappointed the people of Andhra Pradesh, particularly the student community.

Speaking to The Hindu on Thursday, Mr. Ramaiah said everybody expected the Union Finance Minister to mention the proposed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Basar in Adilabad district, but he had failed to do so.

The State Assembly had passed a resolution for an IIT at Basar and all the political parties had extended their support. "The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, went to New Delhi and met the Human Resources Minister, Arjun Singh.

He responded positively and we expected that it would take off soon. But there is no mention in the budget and now uncertainty looms large over the issue,'' Mr. Ramaiah lamented.

According to him, the Basar was suitable place and it satisfied all the criteria needed for setting up the national institute.

The place was well connected with railways and road network and a helipad was set up long ago. "For want of drinking water the IIT at Madras was closed for two months. But here we do not have such problems as Basar is located on the banks of the Godavari,'' he pointed out.

Telangana development

Mr. Ramaiah contended that setting up IIT in Adilabad district would boost the general development of Telangana region and pave the way for more institutions and industries. "By all means, there is a need to set up an IIT here. Of the 3,500 students pursuing higher studies in various IITs, over 500 hail from Andhra Pradesh,'' he said.
