MANGALORE, MARCH 3. Journalist and writer on environmental issues Nagesh Hegde has called upon mediapersons to keep people's movements alive and not let them die abruptly. Inaugurating a two-day seminar on "Environmental concerns and media," organised by the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Mangalore University, at Mangalagangotri, on Thursday, Mr. Hegde said people's movement such as the Dalit movement, farmers' movement, women's movement, consumers' movement, literary movement, environment movement and the like have received a setback in the recent years. The space in the media meant for such movements is occupied by subjects related to fashion and corporate world, he said. Mr. Hegde urged researchers and teachers in universities to provide journalists proper information on environmental aspects. He said that reporting on environmental issues is a challenging task. He termed it [environmental journalism] a "journalism of uncertainty." He said "technical matters" involved in an environmental issue come in the way of reporting on environmental issues. They stand as a hurdle as well as challenge before journalists. Mr. Hegde said that there is thin difference between environmental activism and environmental reporting. Ravindranath Shanbag, human rights activist, said that media should give people what they need. He gave an account of "Bidar industrial tragedy."
