CHENNAI, MARCH 3. The Government departments should adopt the latest technology and use the best construction material available to bring glory to the State buildings, said the Chief of Staff, Southern Command, Ashok Kapur, here today. Buildings such as Parliament House in New Delhi, Howrah Railway station in Kolkata and Victoria Terminus in Mumbai that came up in the middle of 20th century were masterpieces of architecture. But with the advancement in the construction industry, private buildings had overshadowed the Government buildings, he said, inaugurating a seminar on `Impact of Modern Architecture on Government Buildings' organised by the Madras Engineering Service here. He said engineers and architects should strive to bring back those glorious days by proper planning and design. The best utility of a Government building, he said, could be achieved only when all building services function effectively. The level of performance and reliability should be high in the case of specialised buildings such as hospitals. In any project some basic requirements such as ecological balance, space for construction, project cost, use of local materials and specifications and aesthetics should be taken care of keeping in mind the latest available technology. He released a souvenir brought out on the occasion. The Chief Engineer of the Southern Command, Gautam Dutt, whose address was read by Chief Engineer of the Chennai Zone, Deepak J. Thosre, said there had been a shift in building designs and the department engineers should keep abreast of the latest changes in designs to match the quality of private builders.
