COIMBATORE, MARCH 3. A large number of jewellers downed their shutters in the city today protesting the levy of two per cent Excise Duty on branded jewellery. According to the secretary of the Coimbatore Jewellers' Association, S. Venkateshan, about 500 shops here joined the nationwide stir. Our Tirupur Staff Reporter writes: Over 200 jewellery shops also remained closed in Tirupur, Udumalpet and Pollachi. According to them, the strike would continue till the withdrawal of tax. The jewellers had been introducing brands only to offer quality products to customers.
