HYDERABAD, MAR. 3. A fruit vendor attempted suicide by setting himself afire following a dispute with a chit fund agent at Balanagar on Thursday. Family members of Niranjana Charyulu (43) alleged that police inaction over the latter's complaint against the agent, Muthyalu, had led to the self-immolation attempt by Charyulu, who was now battling for his life in Gandhi Hospital. Charyulu's son, Madhava, alleged that his father went into depression after the Balanagar police refused to register a case despite his oral complaint to them last night that Muthyalu had duped him of Rs. 20,000. "Fear of losing the money coupled with police inaction drove my father to resort to the extreme step," he told reporters on Thursday. A hut-dweller of local IDPL slum, Charyulu reportedly deposited money with a chit fund firm through Muthyalu. Even as the maturity period of the deposited amount was over two months ago, Muthyalu failed to ensure return of the money, Madhava alleged. On Wednesday night, Charyulu approached local police after picking up an argument with the agent. However, the Balanagar Inspector, S. Damodar, condemned the charges saying Muthaylu was arrested on Thursday on charge of cheating after receiving a complaint from Madhava.
