MADURAI, MARCH. 3. Even as the Corporation was demolishing sunshades in commercial buildings, protruding onto the roads, streets and by-lanes under the eviction drive, the council today passed a resolution to regularise them on payment of an annual license fee. However, the sunshade should not protrude beyond 2 feet from the wall, the resolution said. The shopkeepers in the `A' and `B' class areas should apply within a month to get license for sunshades on payment of Rs.25 per feet and Rs.15 per feet respectively. The resolution comes into effect from March 7 and the last date for payment of fee is April 11, failing which the sunshades would be pulled down, considering them as encroachments
Regularisation of shops
The council also resolved to regularise shops rented out on lease by transferring the license in the names of `benamis' who had illegally bought them from allottees The Mayor, C. Ramachandran, who moved the resolution, said the officials were facing problems in collecting rent as the original allottees had handed over the shops to their `benamis.' The local body was facing revenue loss as the benamis were legally fighting the issue. The shops could be transferred to the names of benamis on fulfilling the following conditions: payment of all outstanding dues; accepting to hike the rent by 25 per cent, 15 per cent and 10 per cent for the shops in the `A', `B' and `C' categories of commercial areas; payment of an advance which is three times the revised rent; and payment of non-refundable deposit which is 12 times the revised rent. The resolution was sent for Government's consent.
