Vijayawada

VIJAYAWADA, MARCH 3. The 29th municipal division is a semi-commercial and semi-developed area in the heart of the city, which stretches from the Sambamurthi Road on the south-east to the G.S.Raju Road on the north-west. The erstwhile Satyanarayanapuram railway track forms the border of the division on the north-east and Sanyasi Raju street on the south-west. Half the Andhra Ratna Road, the Broadway of Vijayawada, is in this division. Thousands of people from all over the city and the surrounding places come here for entertainment in the dozen or so cinema halls on the street. The Sir Vizzy Aquatic Sports Complex, said to be the only one of its kind in the country, is the pride of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) that maintains it at a considerable cost. The unique aquatic sports complex has one Olympic-size swimming pool and a baby pool for toddlers. The sports complex also has a full-fledged gym for the benefit of the swimmers.

The VMC took up the development of the Sambamurthi Road and G.S.Raju Road as a matter of prestige, braving the wrath of the political parties. The families living in slums on the bunds of Ryve's and Eluru Canals that run parallel to these roads were relocated. The VMC paid compensation to owners of buildings, which were demolished in parts where the roads were much too narrow. These two roads are today among the finest in the city with central lighting and greenery.
New plan
The VMC has plans to develop another 100-foot wide, four-lane road in place of the Satyanarayanapuram railway track that was removed recently. The VMC recently made the necessary arrangement for relocating 50 families that had encroached the Satyanarayanpuram railway track. Apart from the convenience of having wide and beautiful roads, the 29th division also has underground drainage facility. There is, however, more for the VMC to do with regard to the internal roads in the division. The Nageswararao Pantulu Road, Andhraratna Road and Gyanoliv Street -- the three important roads that run parallel to the Sambamurthi Road and G.S.Raju Roads -- are being maintained in good condition. Internal roads in Gandhinagar, Bhavajipet, Seethannapet and Ramanagar need to be improved.
Roads main factor
"The condition of the internal roads is the factor that helps decide whether an area is developed or not. Several colonies that came into existence recently have better internal roads," says K.Padmanabha Rao, an advocate living in Gandhinagar.
