Ban on private university sought

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM. March 3. The Association of Kerala Government College Teachers has called for a ban on the operations of the university run by the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI) in the State. The Government should also order an inquiry into the functioning of other such private universities in the State, a press note issued here said. The ICFAI's university was among the 112 private universities that were banned by the Supreme Court recently from operating in Chhattisgarh. The Government should also take note of the growing public resentment against private universities, the press note added.

Panel formed

The Asan national cultural festival will be held, in connection with Kumaran Asan's birth anniversary, from April 11 to 15. At a meeting held at the Asan memorial at Thonnakkal, an organising committee was formed for the conduct of the festival. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, the Minister for Culture, A.P. Anil Kumar, and Varkala Radhakrishnan, MP, have been elected patrons of the festival. A meeting of the organising committee and of various other sub-committees will be held at 4.30 p.m. on March 6 at Thonnakkal, a press note issued here today said.

NCC seminar

The Thiruvananthapuram group of the NCC is organising a seminar for its officers, Associated NCC officers, military and civilian staff at the Vyloppilly Samskrithi Bhavan tomorrow. The seminar will be inaugurated by the Deputy Director General of NCC (Kerala and Lakshadweep), Brigadier NPR Pillai, at 9 a.m. Sanctioned

N.K. Premachandran, MP, has sanctioned Rs.5 lakhs for setting up a veterinary hospital at Balaramapuram. The District Collector has given administrative sanction for the project.

Dharna

Activists of the Residents' Apex Council of Kerala (RACK) will stage a dharna in front of the divisional office of the Southern Railways in protest against the neglect of Kerala in this year's Railway budget. The dharna will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on March 7.
