`Extortionist' arrested

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MARCH 3. An alleged aide of the Dubai-based underworld don, Chhota Shakeel, has been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police for allegedly extorting money from a doctor in Rohini.

According to the police, the doctor, who runs a clinic at Gurgaon and also a hotel in Mumbai, had been getting threatening calls since January. The calls were being made from Dubai and, in one of the calls, the caller identified himself as Chhota Shakeel.

They were demanding Rs. 5 crores from him. Following negotiations, the deal was settled at Rs. 2 crores. At the behest of the police, the doctor agreed to pay up Chhota Shakeel in instalments. Accordingly, a meeting was fixed at M2K cine multiplex in Rohini where the doctor was supposed to give Chhota Shakeel's henchman Rs. 10 lakhs.

The police had laid a trap and the man was arrested the moment he accepted the money.

The accused, identified as Ramesh Kumar, originally a resident of Rajasthan and presently residing in Jhilmil Colony, told the police that he had got instructions from Chhota Shakeel to collect the money from the doctor on his behalf. Further investigations are on.
