Girl's death leads to riots in Jaffna

By V.S. Sambandan

COLOMBO, MARCH 4. Jaffna and its suburbs today witnessed riots after the death of a teenaged schoolgirl, who was knocked down by a speeding army vehicle. In the ensuing violence, one person was killed and two were injured even as security forces brought the situation under control.

According to sources from the northern Tamil town, Nagendiram Sudharshika was cycling to school around 8 a.m. when the incident took place. The situation in the government-controlled town worsened around 1 p.m., after schools closed for the day.

The sources said, "Students protesting [against] the accident" blockaded the checkpoints before setting them ablaze. "The student was rushed to the Jaffna Hospital and was then taken to the military's Palaly airbase to be airlifted to the capital, Colombo, for specialised medical care, when she succumbed to her injuries."

The Defence Ministry said the driver was arrested. The military and police have launched investigations.

Hours later three Army checkpoints, the political office of the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), an Air Force vehicle were set on fire. The Ministry said the violence was "orchestrated" and "incited by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) after the road accident."

The army said the mobs "resorted to a series of provocative and violent acts that included arson attacks on two bunkers and the SLFP political office, damage to an Air Force vehicle, blockade of roads by burning tyres, pelting stones and pelting stones at security forces." The sources said, "Between 1.30 p.m. and 2 p.m. police burst teargas shells to disburse a crowd, which blockaded a checkpoint." Jaffna has witnessed varied forms of protests this week.
