CHENNAI, MARCH 4. Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), a division of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and the Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre (CII-Godrej GBC) has proposed to launch a LEED-India Green Building rating system. The Chairman of the IGBC and Vice Chairman of the WGBC (World Green Building Council), Parasuraman R., told The Hindu that the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) based in Washington had developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. LEED was created to define green building by establishing a common standard of measurement for a building. It was developed to promote integrated, whole-building design practices and transform the building market into a environmentally friendly. The IGBC has proposed to launch LEED India, which will be similar to LEED rating system with minor modifications so as to suit Indian conditions and priorities. Mr. Parasuraman said LEED was an educational tool that helped all segments of the construction industry to understand sustainability and set appropriate goals and priorities. LEED recognises achievements and promotes expertise in green building through a comprehensive system offering project certification, professional accreditation, training and practical resources.
