'Resistance to VAT will be overcome'

By Our Special Correspondent

KOLKATA, MARCH 4. The Chief Economic Advisor, Department of Economic Affairs, Union Finance Ministry, Ashok Lahiri, today expressed confidence that the resistance to state-level value added tax (VAT) would be overcome and it would be possible to introduce the tax reform measure.

Participating at an interactive session with the Confederation of Indian Industry here, he admitted that VAT introduction was taking time.

"This happens when you have different State governments," he remarked.

He said that it was easy to identify those who were opposing the new form of levy and those supporting it. "If I benefit from not paying any tax I will resist it," he observed.

On the need to integrate all taxes such as CST (Central Sales Tax), he said that it had now become a chicken and egg situation.

However, he expected things to be resolved gradually, saying that there was a roadmap on integrating levies such as octroi and entry tax.
