GULBARGA, MARCH 4. The 19th All-India Conference of the Communist Party of India (CPI), scheduled to be held from March 29 to April 3 in Chandigarh, is likely to take important policy decisions on socio-economic and political issues. Siddanagouda Patil, State Secretary of the CPI, told presspersons here that the conference, which is held once in three years, will review political events at the international and national levels and chalk out the line of action the party should adopt to protect the interests of workers, farmers and poor sections.
State meet
Dr. Patil said the programme will be preceded by a four-day State-level conference of the party in Mangalore from March 10. The conference will be inaugurated by the party Secretary, D. Raja. Sudhakar Reddy, MP, will be the chief guest. The CPI has invited delegates from 65 countries to participate in the all-India conference, and 50 countries have confirmed their participation, Dr. Patil said. He said the conference will pass a resolution condemning "attempts" of the U.S. to impose its economic interests on developing and underdeveloped countries using its military might. It will give a call for a united fight against the attitude of the U.S. The impact of globalisation and liberalisation on Indian industry and agriculture will be discussed and an action plan to oppose policies prepared.
`Issue-based support'
Dr. Patil said that though the CPI, along with other Left parties, has extended issue-based support to the United Progressive Government at the Centre, the party considers it a "capitalist" government. The conference will discuss the Government's decisions which are against the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) of the alliance and "failure" of the CMP implementation monitoring committee headed by the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi. It will also evaluate the Government's performance and the future role of Left parties in the Government. Dr. Patil said that the State conference will discuss the political situation in Karnataka and review the emergence of the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti and the faction of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha headed by K.S. Puttanaiah as political forces.
