Bellary
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELLARY, MARCH 4. Members of the Bellary District Railway Action Committee on Thursday detained the Amaravati Express bound for Vijayawada and a passenger train bound for Bangalore at the Bellary railway station to register their protest against the raw deal given to the State in general and Bellary-Hospet in particular in the Railway Budget. The Amaravati Express was detained for about 15 minutes and the passenger train for over 30 minutes. The protesters took out a procession from Gandhi Bhavan to the station. K.M. Maheshwaraswamy, president of the committee, said that the Union Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, had disappointed the people of the Bellary-Hospet region. Despite submitting memoranda demanding more rail facilities in the region, no steps have been initiated in this regard. The failure of the Railways to concede the long-pending demands of the region, which contributes over Rs. 1,200 crores annually by way of transportation of iron ore and steel, had hurt the sentiments of the people, he said. Mr. Maheshwaraswamy said that the introduction of new trains and extending the existing train facilities had hardly benefited the people of north Karnataka. He urged Mr. Prasad to concede the demands of the people. T.C. Goud, S.C. Brahmmaih, Sonta Giridhar, Abdul Bashir, Dattatreya Reddy, K. Thippeswamy, Abdul Aziz, Potnal Babu, and Ane Ganganna, participated in the rail roko agitation.
