Ghising relents after Buddhadeb's phone calls

By Our Special Correspondent

KOLKATA, MARCH 4. The West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, appears to have persuaded the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) chairman, Subash Ghising, to come round to the idea of becoming administrator to the committee the State Government would set up after the expiry of the Council's term on March 26.

Mr. Bhattacharjee telephoned Mr. Ghising in Darjeeling on March 1 twice and tried to persuade him to find a way to solve the problem arising out of Mr. Ghising's refusal to hold elections to the DGHC within March 26. ``I cannot divulge the content of the conversation now,'' Mr. Bhattacharjee said.

It is learnt that Mr. Ghising adopted a relatively softer position after the phone calls and is understood to have told his aides that the Chief Minister 's initiative in installing him as administrator showed he was serious about maintaining peace in the hills. He has convened a general council meeting tomorrow at Darjeeling.
