NEW DELHI, MARCH 4. The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Centre and four Congress-ruled States on a petition alleging them of squandering tax payers' money worth crores of rupees on advertisements in newspapers on the eve of birthday of political leaders. A Bench comprising the Chief Justice, R. C. Lahoti, and Justice D. M. Dharmadhikari issued the notice to various Union Ministries and Governments of Delhi, Punjab, Uttaranchal and Karnataka on a public interest petition for a direction to produce records on the expenditure incurred and its recovery from them. The petitioners, Manzoor Ali Khan and Rohit Pandey, advocates, alleged that the Centre, States and their agencies were misusing the tax payers' money by indulging in advertisements to enhance the image of their leaders. Such an action amounted to misappropriation and misuse of public money meant for providing basic necessities to the people.
`Rs. 10 crores spent'
The petitioners pointed out that on the 60th birth anniversary of late Rajiv Gandhi, various Ministries and Congress-ruled States issued huge advertisements. They said that around Rs. 5 lakhs was required for a full-page colour advertisement in a national daily. The Centre, various States, and their agencies had spent about Rs. 10 crores on these advertisements. When farmers were committing suicide for inability to repay loans and children dying due to malnutrition, the Central and State governments could not be allowed to waste public money, they said.
