Visakhapatnam in table tennis semifinals

VISAKHAPATNAM, MARCH 4. Host Visakhapatnam moved into the semifinals of the 28th all-India Major Ports' table tennis tournament along with runner-up Mumbai and third-placed Kandla on Friday, the opening day at the Port Indoor Stadium here.

The three teams scored two wins each in their respective four-team pools to earn qualification.

In the 26th hockey tournament the host blanked Tuticorin 8-0 in the inaugural match of the round-robin league. Holder Mumbai and runner-up Kolkota also registered wins, with Mumbai swamping Tuticorin 6-0.

The results: Table tennis: Pool A: Visakhapatnam bt Mormugao 3-0, bt Paradip 3-0; Kolkota bt Paradip 3-0. Pool B: Mumbai bt Chennai 3-0, bt NMPT 3-0. Hockey: Visakhapatnam 8 (K.V. Anjaneya Rao, Vijayananda Kumar two each, V.N. Murthy, M.S. Hussain, K. Bhavani Shankara Rao, L.P.J. Das one each) bt Tuticorin 0. Kolkota 2 (M. Chakravarthi two) bt Chennai 1 (M.S. Annakumar).
