NEW DELHI, MARCH 4. The most contentious decision in respect of the incentive awards in recent times has been that relating to the award of Rs. 6 lakhs given to Anju George for her bronze-winning effort in the 2003 World athletics championships in Paris. For the previous year, Anju got Rs. 20 lakhs for her gold in the Asian Games and Rs. 10 lakhs for her bronze in the Manchester Commonwealth Games. Just Rs. 6 lakhs for a World championship medal? Anju did protest and even wrote to the Union Sports ministry recently, pointing out the lop-sidedness of the awards system. Now, shockingly, the ministry has clubbed `World championships' with the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, meaning a gold medal will be worth Rs. 10 lakhs, silver Rs. 5 lakhs and bronze Rs. 3 lakhs under the revised scheme in all these competitions. There is no mention of `World Cup' though that category is available in the ministry. Our Special Correspondent
