Varsity's closure invites CPI ire

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR, MARCH 4. The district unit of Communist Party of India (CPI) has criticised the Sri Krishnadavaraya University (SKU) administration here for closing the campus. The party felt that taxing the entire student community for a clash between a student and a teaching assistant was not justifiable.

Talking to newspersons here today the party secretary, M.V. Ramana, the deputy secretary, C. Jaffer, and town secretary, D. Narayanaswamy, blamed the inefficiency of the varsity in handling a minor problem for the campus' closure.

`Immoral' action

They termed the action of the Vice-Chancellor "immoral" as it was taken without the consent of the teachers.

The leaders demanded immediate reopening of the campus and wanted the suspension of the AISF students revoked and added that the AISF had nothing to do with the dispute between the student and teaching assistant. Cases against the AISF students were registered at the behest of a professor of the Business Management Department. He had also participated in the protest against AISF, the leaders said.

There were several clashes between the students and teachers in the past but they all were settled amicably without closing the campus, they noted. They recalled that no action was taken against the NSUI students who had manhandled the college principal, G. Venkata Reddy, and the botany professor, T. Pullaiah, for catching some students indulging in malpractices in examinations.

The management's inaction was also evident in the case of irregularities in Centre for Distance Education where its former director, Ch. Ramaprasada Rao, had "swindled" Rs. 24 lakhs, they said. The CPI leaders demanded recovery of the amount from Prof. Rao and his dismissal from service. No action had been taken against him though he had not answered to the show cause notice served on him on January 27, they noted.

Also, Chinnapa Reddy of Physical Education Department too was let off by the authorities even after charges of irregularities were held against him.
