HYDERABAD, MARCH 4. The Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, has given a firm commitment to provide seven-hour power supply per day to the agriculture pumpsets. He promised to make sincere efforts to ensure the supply in a single spell as sought by farmers. Replying to a query raised by D. Umamaheswara Rao (TDP) in the Assembly on Friday, the Minister said the grid was overloaded due to free power supply and the onset of summer. The energy demand had gone up to 157 million units on a single day during February.
Transformer failures
As a result, there were frequent transformer breakdowns. There were as many as 38,354 transformer failures up to January this year whereas the figure for the whole of last year was 36,674. A rolling stock of 3,674 transformers was kept at the disposal of the district officials. Another 85 new transformer repair centres were opened taking the total to 272, he said. The Minister denied that his party had promised supply to the farm sector for 13 hours as stated by the former Energy Minister, K. Subbarayudu, and that Transco was selling power to other States during daytime.
