Malla Reddy Kurnool district SP

HYDERABAD: The Government has posted B. Malla Reddy as Superintendent of Police of Kurnool district on Friday. The Government has been receiving flak from different quarters for keeping the post vacant for some time, especially in the backdrop of escalating Maoist violence in the district. Atul Singh has been posted in the security wing of the Intelligence Department. Umesh Kumar has been shifted from the post of Additional DGP, Human Rights, and posted to the Andhra Pradesh Road Safety Authority.

Sale of EAMCET applications up

HYDERABAD: More than 1.94 lakh application forms have been sold for EAMCET-2005 scheduled to be held on April 29. The EAMCET Convenor, L.V.A.R. Sarma, on Friday said number of applications could go up as details from some of the coastal centres were yet to come. Though the sale of application forms was closed on Thursdday, details of the sale were not received from these centres. "There is a marked increase in the sale of forms for medicine and 25,000 more applications have been sold this time when compared to last year," Dr.Sarma said.

Pay raise for village servants

HYDERABAD: The Revenue Minister, Dharmana Prasada Rao, has said that a decision has been taken to enhance salary of village servants by Rs. 300. Making a statement in the Assembly on Friday, Mr. Rao said the salary had been enhanced to Rs. 1,500 from Rs. 1,200. New salaries would come into effect on April 1. Andhra Pradesh Village Servants Association members had organised demonstrations in the city and had planned to launch relay fast from March 7.

Dropout rate high in Urdu schools

HYDERABAD: The School Education Minister, N. Rajyalaxmi, on Friday told the Assembly during question hour that dropout rate in Urdu medium schools was high. Of 77,313 students enrolled in class I, retention was only 10,164 students in class X. The priority of the Government was not to increase schools of Urdu medium but check the dropout rate, she said.

Tollgates on highways to be closed

Hyderabad: Tollgates on the State highways at Rudraram and Sangli will be closed. Giving this information in the Assembly on Friday, the Minister for Roads and Buildings, J. Ramamohan Rao, said this was in line with the decision taken by the Government to wind up tollgates on all its highways. He was responding to a complaint by P. Keshav (TDP) about the `highway robbery' by private parties in the State. Mr. Rao announced that the four-laning work of the national highway between Pune and Hyderabad had been entrusted to Progressive Construction company on BOT basis.

Service rules for PR teachers

HYDERABAD: The Government has entrusted Mallu Ravi, MP, its representative in New Delhi, the task of getting the Centre's clearance of the comprehensive service rules for panchayat raj (PR) teachers. A. Anantaramulu, president, and P. Subba Reddy, general secretary, Andhra Pradesh State Teachers Union, said in a statement on Friday that the proposed services rules were pending in the Prime Minister's office.

RTC shortlists 71 candidates

HYDERABAD: The APSRTC on Friday announced results of the written examination held on February 27 for recruiting officers under training (technical/general). Thirtyfour candidates in the general category and 37 in the technical category have been shortlisted for interview based on their performance in the examination which was held at centres in Hyderabad and Vijayawada. The date of interview would be intimated individually by post to candidates later, according to a press release.

Governor couple at Ahobilam

KURNOOL: The Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, and his wife, Ujwala Shinde, worshiped at Ahobilam in Kurnool district on Friday. They performed `Astothara puja' and worshiped at Prahlada Varadaraja temple. The Endowments Minister, M. Satyanarayana Rao, the Minister for Lift Irrigation, M. Mareppa, the Allagadda MLA, Gangula Pratap Reddy, and the Collector, Vikas Raj, accompanied the Governor. Later, the Governor and his wife worshipped at Mahanani temple.

Mangi dalam member surrenders

ADILABAD: Kataveni Shankar alias Sham (22), a member of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) Mangi dalam surrendered on Friday before the Adilabad SP, Kripanand Tripathi Ujela, citing disillusionment with party ideology as the reason. Shankar was involved in the stealing of explosives at Khairguda opencast mines on February 26.

Regularisation of contract staff

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Medical Health and Vidya Vidhana Parishat Employees' Union has demanded regularisation of contract staff working in paramedical and nursing wings of health services. The union on Friday represented to various department officials to press the demand. It said members of the union would launch relay hunger strike on March 7 at Indira Park here.

V. Rajeswar Rao elected chairman

HYDERABAD: The Wavival Khadi Gramodyog Pratishtan clarified on Friday that V. Rajeswar Rao, former MP, and not P.V. Rajeswara Rao as reported in these columns had been elected its chairman. He will hold the post of member-secretary, according to a press release.

Man, sister commit suicide

ADILABAD: A brother and sister belonging to Mancherial committed suicide late on Thursday reportedly unable to pay the dowry allegedly demanded by the girl's lover. According to the Mancherial SI, K. Purushottam Reddy, Bhulakshmi (19) of Marutinagar fell in love with a motor mechanic. However, the lover allegedly demanded hefty dowry due to which Bhulakshmi had attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills three days ago. She was out of the hospital on Wednesday. On Thursday she along with her elder brother, Durga Rao (25), approached her lover who again allegedly demanded a hefty sum as dowry. Unable to pay the money, the brother and sister consumed pesticide.

Advocate dies in court

CUDDAPAH: A senior advocate, K. Harinath Reddy (65), died of heart attack in the district court on Friday. He argued a case and later collapsed in the official receiver's office on the court premises in the afternoon.

Kerosene seized

CUDDAPAH: About 150 litres of kerosene and a jeep carrying it were seized near Nekanapuram crossroads in Siddhavatam mandal by the Rajampet DSP, Balakrishna Reddy, and staff on Friday. The DSP ordered seizure of the kerosene brought from a fair price shop at Atlur, while returning after inspecting Siddhavatam police station. The Rajampet Rural circle inspector, Venugopal and ASI, Tirupalaiah, handed over the kerosene and the jeep to the deputy MRO, Faiyaz Basha.

FFW rice confiscated

CUDDAPAH: The police arrested two persons and seized 83 bags of food-for-work rice near Kothapalle Kotilingam Choultry near Proddatur around Thursday midnight. On a tip off from an anonymous caller, the Proddatur Rural Circle Inspector, Syed Vali, and the Sub-Inspector, Rajendra Prasad, arrested a contractor, Bayyanna, and Balakrishna who purchased the rice, while the it was being transferred into 50 kg. bags.

NAAC recognition

KURNOOL: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of the University Grants Commission (UGC) has accorded `B plus' rating to the Government Degree College for Men here. The executive committee of the council accepted the report of the peer team, which visited the college on February 18 and 19 and accorded the recognition. In a statement, the Principal, R. Venkateswara Reddy, said the college was the first institution in the district to receive the honour.

Cuddapah students excel

CUDDAPAH: Cuddapah students bagged the third place in English medium and fourth place in Telugu medium in the recent State-level Chekumuki talent test, the Jana Vignana Vedika leaders said on Friday.

Mudhole SI in ACB net

ADILABAD: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday trapped the Mudhole Sub-Inspector, T. Venkateshwar Rao, while he was accepting an illegal gratification of Rs. 10,000 from a vehicle owner.

According to the Adilabad ACB CI, Kiran Kumar, the SI demanded Rs. 15,000 from D. Sainath for releasing a vehicle involved in an accident. The SI accepted tainted money of Rs. 10,000 towards first instalment.

DIG's advice to policemen

WARANGAL: The Warangal range DIG, B.L. Meena, has asked policemen to focus on

eve-teasing cases and deal sternly with rowdy elements. He visited Kakatiya University campus police station on Thursday and took stock of the crime rate, recoveries and percentage of cases solved, among other issues.

He gave away cash awards to constable V. Kiran, and head constable, Shyamsunder, for arresting a notorious gang involved in eight cases of house burglaries.

AIDS awareness camps

Sangareddy: As part of the Statewide campaign to create awareness on AIDS, the Medak district police organised several camps throughout the district on Friday.

In Sangareddy, the Additional SP, J.A. Alexander, asked staff to spread anti-AIDS message among the masses. Batches of 40 to 50 policemen would be trained during these orientation camps.

BSNL incentives

WARANGAL: The BSNL, Warangal, proposes to offer incentives to those paying their telephone bills in time. The general manager, K K Thakur, said those paying their bills before 15th of every month would get a memento and a telephone card worth Rs 1,000 and those paying before 20th, would be given a memento and telephone card worth Rs 500 to the first person and Rs 300 worth card to the second person.

Every month, the candidates would be selected through a lucky draw to which senior citizens of the town would be invited, Mr. Thakur said.

Free medical camp

KARIMNAGAR: The Chalimeda Anand Rao Institute of Medical Sciences is organising a free medical camp at the primary health centre of Kalwa Srirampur mandal on Sunday for the benefit of rural people of the surrounding mandals.

Expert doctors in the areas of medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology, ENT, dermatology would participate in the camp.

Dargah head's appeal

WARANGAL: Head of the Dargah Shareef Aasthanaye Ghousiyah, SMS Ahmad Siddiqui, has urged the Chief Minister to exempt religious institutions from payment of electricity bills.

Since religious institutions were rendering selfless service without any profit motive, they may be supplied power free of cost he said.
