Delhi's beautifying efforts lauded

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MARCH 4. The Union Urban Development Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, today lauded the role played by various agencies in Delhi in beautifying its parks and gardens and said the Centre will extend all sorts of facilities to Delhi Development Authority so that the efforts can be strengthened.

Inaugurating the three-day 21st Annual DDA Flower Show at the picturesque 69 hectare Sanjay Lake in East Delhi, in which DDA, CPWD, DTDC and private nurseries are participating, the Minister said: "DDA has done a wonderful job in enhancing the greenery in Delhi." Noting that Bangalore is known as the city of gardens, he said the same can now also be said of Delhi.

Stating that people should also take the responsibility of keeping the parks and city clean, Mr Azad said, flowers are not only for decorations or to attract tourism but also can be further explored for commercial purposes through their export.

The flower show, DDA said, has been organised to increase awareness about environmental protection and maintenance of greens besides dissemination of information regarding various varieties of flowers, foliage, plants and cacti.

The show has been organized in a fashion that could provide extensive information for the visitors. The flower arrangements with a variety of displays have been made to attract housewives, children and people from all age groups.

Categorised into 18 sections such as Flower Arrangement of Pots, Seasonal Pots, Plants display, Hanging Baskets, Perennial and Bulbous Plants, Dahlias, Foliage Plants, Exhibition Foliage Plants, Bougainvilleas, Cacti and other Succulents, Bonsai, Garden in Container, Cut Flowers, Gladioli, Roses, Decorated Stalls, Flower Arrangement and Mali class of Flower Arrangement, the show has brought a riot of colours to the Sanjay Lake area.

At the show stalls for sale of garden equipments and plants have also been organised for the benefit of the plant lovers. During the Udyan Utsav, a competition was held amongst various developed and developing greens and DDA nurseries. This, DDA said, is to encourage and motivate the up-keepers of these greens to work hard. This is also recognition of the hard work done by them. The competition had been held in various categories and the prizes to the winners will be given by the Vice-Chairman of DDA, Madhukar Gupta, on the last day of the show on March 6.
