Karimnagar I-T range bang on target

By Our Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR, MARCH 4. The Karimnagar range Income-Tax department is making strides in collection of tax in spite of acute drought conditions in the district.

The range collected Rs. 38 crores up to the end of February as against last year's Rs. 26.93 crores, an increase of Rs. 11.07 crores. The I-T authorities are gearing up to achieve the target - fixed at Rs. 46 crores -- by the month-end.

Disclosing this to newsmen here on Friday evening, the Chief Commissioner of IT, Hyderabad-II, Pradip K. Sinha, attributed the increase in collections to Karimnagar range officials launching a drive against tax evaders. Accordingly, the authorities had carried out survey actions in about 46 cases of different trades and professions and unearthed additional income of Rs. 6 crore which yielded taxes of Rs. 2 crores to the department.

Tapping the source

The tax deducted at source (TDS) was a major revenue earner for Karimnagar range, he said and expressed concern over shortfall in collection of taxes from some State Government departments. During the survey actions, the authorities had detected 11 cases of TDS discrepancies to the tune of Rs. 80 lakhs. The TDS inspections in State Government offices, local bodies, educational institutions revealed that employees were neither filing their returns of income nor paying taxes correctly.

The employees had also made bogus claims under Section 80 DDB to avoid taxes (medical expenses). The bogus claims of employees were identified and the IT authorities were taking steps for recovery. He said during the last financial year they conducted inspection of TDS in banks and found irregularities and had also taken appropriate action.

Slew of measures

In order to widen the tax base, the IT authorities have initiated series of actions which had its impact with a great surge in filling of returns of income in the current financial year. Already the department had received 48,881 returns against last year's 25,166. Besides, the department processed 35,636 returns up to the end of February. He said as a taxpayer-friendly measure, refund amount of Rs. 10.85 lakhs was handed over to the finance manager of the Singareni Collieries Company Limited for disbursement among 1,031 employees of the low-income group along with their salaries.

The Commissioner of Income Tax, Hyderabad-II, Vijay Kumarand, and the Additional Commissioner of IT, Karimnagar range, K Srinivasa Reddy, were present.
