By Our Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD, MARCH 4. Forest sleuths led by M. Purushotham Reddy, Divisional Forest Officer, Nizamabad, today raided godowns at Malapally and Shantinagar on the outskirts of the town and recovered smuggled timber worth about Rs.1 lakh.

Giving details, Mr. Reddy said they had come to know about the illegal transportation of teak logs following the arrest of four persons belonging to the district in Pusad forest sub-division of Yavatmal district in Maharashtra recently. The Maharashtra forest authorities led by Sub-Divisional Forest Officer, Deshmukh, brought the accused here and sought the cooperation of the forest department to conduct raids. The Superintendent of Police, N. Madhusudhan Reddy, arranged adequate security to carry out raids.

The main accused, Vasin, was at large. The accused were suspected to have indulged in smuggling of teak logs in a big way. It was said that the accused smuggled out as many as 15 truckloads of forest timber. The forest officials, however, did not confirm this.
