Belgaum
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELGAUM, MARCH 5. The Bharatiya Janata Party legislator representing the Bagewadi Assembly constituency, Abhay Kumar Patil, has urged the Centre to consider a proposal to lift water from the Malaprabha to fill water tanks. It is almost six months now since the proposal was made to the Government, he said and alleged that the Congress-led governments at the Centre and the State have not taken the proposal seriously. Briefing presspersons here on Saturday about the development works taken up in his constituency, he said he made the proposal to lift water from the Malaprabha to fill the tanks so that it will irrigate nearly 35,000 acres of land, besides recharging the groundwater table. A large number of borewells have gone dry owing to the receding groundwater table. The waters tanks included under the proposal fall in Kakti, Honga, Bhutramanahatti, Agasga, Devagaon and Kednur. It will require Rs. 19 crores to implement the proposal, he said and urged the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to meet Sri Sai Baba of Puttaparti in the light of a commitment made by the Puttaparti Sai Foundation to take up permanent drinking water supply schemes for areas facing an acute water crisis in Bagewadi and other Assembly constituencies in the district. Though the foundation has promised to take up the schemes on its own, a formal request from the Chief Minister will expedite the matter, he said. Mr. Patil said his proposal to improve the road conditions is under consideration by the Government. A sum of Rs. 2.40 crores will be spent by the State Government and Rs. 85 lakhs by the National Bank on Agriculture and Rural Development on asphalting and reconstructing roads in his constituency, he added.
