Objections lodged against Charles' wedding

By Hasan Suroor

LONDON, MARCH 5. The wedding plans of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, who are to marry at a civil ceremony in Windsor on April 8, hit a potential snag on Saturday after it emerged that the local registry had received several objections to their marriage, and if even one of them were upheld no certificate of marriage could be issued.

Friday was the deadline for filing objections and media reports claimed that nine people had challenged the wedding. The office of the Registrar-General would not confirm the number but said "several'' objections had been received. A decision is expected next week.

The grounds on which the marriage has been challenged were not known though one of the objectors, a vicar, was reported as saying that as a divorcee Prince Charles could not remarry while remaining an heir to the throne. He said if his objection was rejected he would demonstrate against the wedding.

As marriages between divorcees are not approved by the Church of England, Prince Charles opted for a civil ceremony, but traditionalists still believe that it is not appropriate.
